Artist Note

Mehreens creative process has involved an investigation of concepts such as authenticity and objecthood by using an almost encyclopaedic approach and quasi-scientific precision. What emerges are coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections which make it possible to both revise and complement art historical as well as socio-political narratives. By applying a poetic and often metaphorical language, surprisingly analogies have emerged by reflecting on the closely related subjects of archive and memory. This has often resulted in an examination of both the human need for conclusive stories and the question of whether anecdotes fictionalise history. The constellation of themes that define Mehreens work at the moment are inspired by specific subcultures of science fiction such as magic realism, cyberpunk, and speculative fiction that act as a vehicle to engage real life experiences with innovative ways of exploring the intersections of identity and imagination.

Mehreen Murtaza completed her BFA with Honors from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore in May 2008; received a post graduate diploma in teaching from Beaconhouse National University in 2009.
